Dear friends,

Not all of you have access to the annual Assembly Report nor for that matter reports to the CBWC Board. I thought it would be of interest to share with you my gratefulness for having worked over this last 12 years with the following outstanding BUWC/CBWC Presidents: Sam Chaise, David Simpson, Jan Paasuke, Greg Anderson, and Laura Nelson.
What follows is a celebration of what we have done together; some of which will be embraced, some of it not so much. Nonetheless I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve with you.

  • Re-establish national identity in the following categories
    • Re-establish national staff conference
    • North American Baptist Fellowship (NABF)
    • Baptist World Alliance (BWA)
    • Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC)
    • Canadian Council of Churches (CCC)
  • Re-establishing Canadian Council of Christian Charities (CCCC)
  • Making Banff Pastors and Spouses Conference the CBWC’s while still inviting others
  • Resourcing board education in new and important directions
    • Protect (Larry Nelson)
    • Generative Thinking (John Pellowe)
    • Development (Larry Matthews)
  • We have explored both the concept of zero-based budgeting and zero-based ministry
  • Under David Simpson we have explored strategic planning
  • Change of name from Baptist Union of Western Canada to Canadian Baptists of Western Canada to align ourselves with 3 other denominational partners in building a united national witness
  • Centralized Board governance (I have come to believe it needs to be broadened again and regret my instincts to the contrary)
  • Appointment of Director of Development
  • Appointment of Director of Ministry
  • First women on the Executive Staff (there are now 3)
  • Appointment of Director of Children and Families
  • Appointment of Church Health Strategist
  • Communication and Stewardship Committee established
  • Every 2 years we conduct a communications audit to ensure effective communication
  • Weekly newsletter, monthly Making Connections, Treasurer’s Corner, weekly Church Planting Blog
  • Geographic diversification of staff throughout the West so that now staff reside in each province
  • 6 managers or Executive Staff work from home offices
  • Re-establishing nominations process with more Assembly input
  • Establishing industry standard orientations and transitions for executive staff and senior managers
  • With the help of Larry Nelson CA sought to explore mutual concerns between CBWC and CBWC Foundation
  • Standardizing the Birkman 360 as the employee assessment and coaching tool
  • Resourcing executive staff to develop dashboard measurements and outcomes for their engagement with individual constituency churches
  • Establishing of undergrad education and cohorts at Carey and at Ambrose to begin to address the loss of Baptist Leadership Training School (BLTS), ASCENT, and Rocky Mountain College
  • Establishment of the beginning of a process with the Board in addressing complicated issues
  • Collection, collation and protocols for all policies and procedures of the last 50 years
  • Founding participant of the New Baptist Covenant
  • Decision of CBWC Board to accept the offer of extra funds from CBWC Foundation for ministry in 2005-2008
  • Restarted legacy, wills and bequests ministry which had become dormant
  • Listening and Covenanting Sessions, and Leadership Forums in most areas of the CBWC
  • Celebration Dinners in all regions
  • Establishing Exit Interviews as people move on
  • Proactive decisions and actions to assess liability risk management
  • Widened circle of input, influence and voices; broadening of stakeholder opinion and especially offering time during The Gathering for group discussion
  • From renting a building to owning a building for our Head Office in Calgary
  • Augmented our services to support refugee sponsorship; now in the process of being a key resource to over 250 refugees
  • Adoption of the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
