Vol 4 No. 5 Children and Family Ministry Staff Appointments

Ministry to children and families have taken a prominent place in our life together as churches for over a hundred and forty years. What has been important to us historically is no less true today. The children and families network in the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada has been led in recent years by the following people as chairs, interim chairs or sharing that responsibility: Joan Churchill, Jo-Ann Matiachuk, Jennifer Dietrich and Mike Engbers. The committee members at present are:

Brad Naylor, First Baptist Church, Brandon, MB

Jo-Ann Matiachuk, First Baptist Church, Vancouver, BC (Consultant)

Mike Engbers, Trinity Baptist Church, Sherwood Park, AB (Interim Chair)

Pam Borchert, First Baptist Church, Kelowna, BC

Sharon Harris, First Baptist Church, Lethbridge, AB

Sherry Bennett, Southside Community Church, Surrey, BC

Sue Julien, Summerland Baptist Church, BC.

The 2005 Assembly approved the appointment of staffing to this ministry. A support person was put in place to aid the committee’s work. In the summer and fall of 2007, the committee with the support of Bill Mains, created, advertised and interviewed several candidates for three regional, contract and part time workers in the Heartland, Alberta and the central Okanagan of British Columbia. These positions are regional for effectiveness and to emphasize our commitment to distributive leadership and regional ministry support. These contracts are for a one-year term each and are the first wave of our own commitment to this central, core, exciting and strong ministry in our midst.

January, 2008

Rev. Jeremy Bell, Executive Minister of the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, is pleased to announce the appointment of several new, part-time resource people to provide leadership, support, coaching and encouragement to our churches in the area of Children and Families Ministries (CFam). These new CFam Coordinators will be developing initiatives, networks and programs to help children and families grow in the Faith and to develop a life long desire to serve Christ and His church.  They will work in close partnership with our established CFam Network. The three CFam positions are one year appointments with approximately 10-15 hours available per week to help pastors, staff and volunteers within our constituency.

Effective February 1, 2008 to January 31, 2009, Mandi Hecht from Prince Albert will be providing CFam leadership and assistance to our Heartland Area churches.  Mandi is an active member of FBC Prince Albert. She is currently the Elder of Intergenerational Ministry for her church and has considerable experience in organizing and coordinating church programs for all ages.

Effective May 1, 2008 to April 30, 2009, Dawn Medgett from Calgary will be providing CFam leadership and assistance to our Alberta Area churches.  Dawn is currently on staff part-time as Children’s Pastor at Westview Baptist Church, Calgary.  She has many years of experience in a variety of family and children’s programs in Baptist churches in three of our four Western provinces.

Effective September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2009, Pam Borchert and Sue Julien from BC’s Okanagan will “Job-Share” a CFam position. This position will resource our churches in the Interior and North of British Columbia and Yukon. Pam is on staff part-time at FBC Kelowna and Sue is on staff part-time at Summerland Baptist Church.  Both currently serve their churches as Directors of Children and Family Ministries. They have a great deal of experience in church programs and have been very involved in the CBWC’s CFam Network.  Upon conclusion of Pam’s and Sue’s appointments, the subsequent CFam position for BC will focus on the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley and/or Vancouver Island.

We welcome these four well-qualified people to their new CFam positions and wish them every success and satisfaction in their new responsibilities. They join our cluster of part-time, term appointed people who help and resource our CBWC church congregations, leaders and  pastors in a variety of other areas such as Clergy Care, Refugees and  Uprooted Peoples, Urban Camping, Short-Term Ministries, Missional Church Development, Conflict Resolution, Governance, Liability Risk Management  and Human Resources.

Any further information can be directed to Bill Mains at 1 800 820 2479.

We are very happy to have such gifted experienced and committed people willing to serve our family of churches.

In Christ,

Jeremy Bell
