Dear Folks,
It is with a sense of joy and trepidation that I embark on today’s newsletter; a sense of joy because there are some incredibly unusual and gifted authors in our midst. This family of churches has produced gifted authors and the themes that they have been willing and able to write on are truly broad and impressive. You will find in the list that follows insightful. The list includes a popular history by Norman Archer, a book on brief pastoral conversations by Roy Bell, as well as the very well received work by Mark Buchanan and one of the more recent additions to the publishing world, on the topic of community by Tim Dickau. Stan Grenz’s work has stood the test of time because so much of his scholarship was outside time, rooted in the Word of God. Jonathan Wilson continues to be a much sought after gifted writer and speaker in the larger theological and contemporary world and I would be utterly remiss to fail to mention that Bruce Milne’s Know the Truth is the best selling single theological work in the world.
So, if this newsletter and topic brings me joy, why do I have some trepidation? It is the caution and concern that comes from the notion that I will have missed someone and will need to do a catch up letter so to encourage all who have done this great work that they might continue to do so. I am thankful to Ceal Mclean for her diligence in finding much of this material and accept that any errors of omission are my responsibility. Many of these books are available from the Calgary CBWC office in their Resource Centre. To know more about the resource centre please call Kim at 403-228-9559 or email office@cbwc.ca. Soon after you receive this newsletter, you will also be able to access the resource centre through our CBWC website (a notice will go out with that announcement in the next week or so). While some of the books are not in our resource centre presently, we are making an effort to place all of them there in the next year.
One outstanding book that is missing from this list, out of print, and hard to get a hold of is the self published book, Pioneering in Western Canada: A Story of Baptists by C.C. McLaurin. It is one of the best popular history books that I have read and certainly one of the better books I’ve read over the last year.
Please remember that this is God’s story and work through these people; the honour belongs to Him and not to them. This is what each author would have you know.
Warmly,
In Christ,
Jeremy
