Vol 8 No. 13 The End of Lent Primer

Dear Folks,

It seems far too soon to be speaking about Easter, especially since we have not fully finished Lent, but I wish to make some observations even at this early date.

If you have forgone, fasted or gone without some things over this Lenten period there are some new obstacles to overcome as you go back to the “new normal”. Whether it is the re-introduction of a food or an activity, do so gradually, continuously with full recognition that it may be a challenge. If no coffee or no television during Lent, then please don’t revert, even degrade your Lenten covenant with too much coffee or copious television. There is another danger when Lent has included a particular spiritual reflection or exercise and then the absence of that discipline results in a spiritual void or internal anarchy. Replace, transition and pace well any changes in your patterns so that the Holy Spirit continues to be your strength and guide, and you can be buffered against discouragement and much more.

The previous paragraph may seem strange if only because Easter is Easter and Lent is what others do. I have rarely gone without during Lent, yet the profound change in me occurred about twenty years ago when I realized how hurried, impatient and superficial my Baptist background was when Easter was reduced to a Thursday to Sunday blur with little concern or preparation for this Holy Day.

We have ten days left to reflect at the narratives in the Gospel of John. We have a week and a half left to contemplate the gift of Jesus: his birth, his life, his passion, his death, his resurrection and his promise to return. Contemplate, yes, but also to reflect on my place, response and re-commitment to my Lord; Friend, Saviour and Redeemer of those who call upon him as Christ the Lord.

Warmly,

In Christ,

Jeremy
