Vol 9 No. 10 How Do We Describe Christianity in Canada?

Dear Folks,

Numbers are never intended, nor do they ever achieve, capturing the full picture of God’s
presence and activity.

In my previous newsletter on the demographic of churches, I said the following about this kind
of information: “Numbers are never intended, nor do they ever achieve, capturing the full picture of
God’s presence and activity”. The same qualifiers hold true for the numbers in Canada. Cailey Morgan
wanted to make a small correction about the Baptist General Conference numbers. Baptist General
Conference Churches actually has a grand total of 107 churches, rather than the 103 that I reported.

The numbers and mix of churches in Canada are important for us to understand. By affiliation
alone, Canada is a catholic country. They are about to pick a new pope. For many, that is a big deal. If
that is a big deal for my neighbour, it should be a big deal for me, too. Some may counter this argument
by criticizing the Roman Catholic faith… much of which I would agree with, but ironically, even in secular
Quebec, over 80% identify themselves as Roman Catholic, and interest in religious themes has increased
8% in two years. Nevertheless, here are the figures for Canada. Thank you, Cailey.
