Dear Folks,
We’ve been tracking Danice Carlson’s work at Serve this year and we’ve picked up some final questions with her in this newsletter for today. We are very thankful for her and for all her hard work amongst us.
1. How many teens and how many churches participated in Serve this year?
We had 192 registrations, coming from 18 churches across Western Canada. 3 of those churches didn’t have youth groups but sent one or two kids that were connected to other groups for the week.
2. What are some of the projects that happened this year?
List of Serve 2013 jobs completed:
- Prepared and served 10 different meals with Siloam, Salvation Army, and the UGM
- Completed the stone repointing of the exterior of Bethlehem Aboriginal
- Sorted and organized donations of food and clothing
- Painted bathrooms, kitchens, basements, stairwells, doors, a long fence outside the Ivan Franko Senior’s Manor and the FEC Youth room
- Gardened and weeded
- Laid parking lots and lawns
- Cleaned and organized kitchens and costume rooms
- Ran 2 day-camps all week long
- Built bunk beds for a woman’s shelter and cleaned their bedrooms and bathrooms
- Handed out muffins on the street and prayed for people
3. Are there particular highlights or important things you want us to know?
There were actually several highlights! Bethlehem Aboriginal had some pretty crazy work done! The group from Edmonton repointed the stonework outside and their work attracted the attention of some local masons who thought the work was professionally done. My highlight tends to always be the last night, not just because I’ve survived the week, but because we get to hear stories from many of the teens and some of the leaders about moments during the week that were encouraging to them. Also, on the Friday Filipino Evangelical Church supplied an AMAZING Filipino dinner for everyone. We honestly felt so served by them in the midst of trying to serve the North End of Winnipeg.
Warmly,
In Christ,
Jeremy
