Dr. Ron Watts

yellow flowerThe CBWC family is deeply saddened to learn  of the death of Rev. Dr. Ronald Francis Watts on January 16, 2013 in Edmonton after a short illness.  Dr. Watts was the founding Principal of the Baptist Leadership Training School (1949) and had a very significant influence on hundreds, if not thousands, of Baptist young people over the life of BLTS and, through them, all churches within the  CBWC.

Ron was born in Calgary on August 21, 1918 to Avis (Greer) and Frank Watts, who worked for the RCMP.  His family moved to Vancouver, where Ron attended elementary and junior high school. The family returned to Edmonton for a new RCMP posting where Ron finished high school and was confirmed in the Anglican church. His interest in amateur radio, as well as an invitation from a friend,  led him to join a radio operators’ club at Macdonald Baptist Church where he was baptized,  came under the mentorship of Rev. Harold Stibbards and decided to enter Christian ministry.

Ron began his pastoral studies at St. Stephen’s College, Edmonton and served as a student pastor at Shiloh Baptist and Bonnie Doon Baptist.  At Bonnie Doon, Ron met his wife Fanshun who was a leader in the Christian Girls in Training.  Together, they had three sons:  David, Jonathan and Peter.

Ron and Fanshun moved to Hamilton, Ontario where he completed his divinity degree at McMaster University and Fanshun worked in the University Library.  In 1944, they were called to serve at Calvary Baptist in Weyburn, SK, the only full-time pastorate he undertook during his career.

In 1949, Ron and Fanshun moved to Calgary to establish the Baptist Leadership Training School.  In 1960, Ron received an honourary doctorate from McMaster University to honour his work founding and running BLTS.  In 1971, Ron and Fanshun moved to Oakville, Ontario where Ron became the General Secretary of the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec and Fanshun worked as the National Secretary of CGIT.  Ron retired from the CBOQ (formerly the Baptist Convention of Ontario and Quebec)  in 1984 but was active in Oakville’s Central Baptist Church and  named Pastor Emeritus for the church.  Ron was also the VP of a local chapter of Amnesty International.

Ron was predeceased by his parents, his loving wife Fanshun and his son, Jonathan.  He is survived by his sons David and Peter (Caitlin).  The family held an open house at son David’s home in Edmonton on Saturday, January 19.  A memorial service will be held in Oakviille at a date and place to be announced.

Please pray for Ron’s family as they grieve his passing.  We share their sadness yet also rejoice that Ron is now home with the Lord and Saviour he loved so much.  We are eternally grateful for Ron’s life and ministry among us. His legacy and service to God endures. Praise be to God.

Dr. Lance Morgan

yellow flowerIt is with deep sadness that we share with you the news that Rev. Dr. Lance Morgan has died on Friday, January 4. Lance was the Lead Pastor at First Baptist Church, Prince George for well over thirty years. Lance, along with his wife Pat, has had a profound ministry on the city of Prince George and our entire denomination.

Rev. Morgan was named Citizen of the Year in 1984, became a  Freeman of the city in 1988 and was named as the city’s honorary chaplain in 2001. He was also honoured by the CBWC  for holding the longest period of service by a pastor – 36 years.

Car Accident Prayers Requested

Please pray for Sandy Smith, associate Pastor of First Baptist, Edmonton who was injured in a car accident following the Banff Pastors and Spouses Conference on November 8.   Sandy was driving keynote speaker Myra Blyth to the Calgary airport at about 12:30 pm when she was rear-ended  near Canmore by a car going much faster than the rest of the traffic in the midst of a snow storm.

Sandy sustained neck and back injuries and was taken to Foothills Hospital in Calgary by ambulance.  Myra was unhurt.  Several CBWC pastors, such as Ryan Sato, Senior Pastor at FBC, Edmonton, and their spouses were in following vehicles and were able to help out at the accident scene and get Myra to the airport.  Sandy’s husband Peter was able to drive down from Edmonton to pick Sandy up once she was released from hospital.

We are grateful that the accident wasn’t worse in the terrible weather and that Sandy has been released from hospital.  We are also thankful to God also that Myra was unhurt.  Sandy reports being very sore, so please continue to pray for her.

Please also pray for Sharon Oncuil, Administrative Assistant to Alberta Regional Minister Dennis Stone.  On Tuesday, Sharon was attending a reception for Carey Theological College at the Banff Pastors and Spouses Conference at the Banff Springs Hotel when a chunk of the ceiling collapsed on her without warning.  She received medical care almost instantly from Dan Galpin, Harbour Master of Keats Camps, who is a paramedic.  She was taken to hospital and released with a very bad black eye and quite a lot of bruising.  Again, we are thankful for God’s grace that this accident wasn’t worse.  Please pray for Sharon’s continued recovery.

Kory Lewis

We mourn the passing of Kory Lewis who was welcomed to glory on October 16, 2012.  Kory was a long-time member of Emmanuel Baptist in Victoria, BC.

Kory was born in 1921 and grew up in Chilliwack, which was then a small town, a location that gave Kory many advantages that shaped her character.

“Our parents knew the parents of many of our friends, and grownups would often speak to us when they saw us on the street. But the greatest advantage was having Christian parents, whom I know provided us an example at home and in the community through work in service organizations as well as our church, First Baptist.”

Her dedication to service began early when she started singing in the church choir at age 7.  Throughout her life she continued to love music, becoming a skilled pianist who accompanied choirs and other musicians.  Later as a teacher, she trained many school choirs to compete in festivals in Victoria, the Fraser Valley and the Okanagan region.

Kory worked as a teacher in Chilliwack, Penticton and Victoria until retiring in 1978 to take care of her mother.  She also worked as a Career Education consultant to the Ministry of Education.  She was active on many BC Teachers’ Federation committees, wrote curriculum for a Career Education course and was honoured to become a life member of the BCTF in 1977.  While a teacher, she was very active supporting Inter-School Christian Fellowship groups to support them in their faith journeys.

Despite a long and busy career, she had time for an exhausting array of activities that show little sign of letting up at age 90.

Kory’s character wass one of “steadfast determination,” says Ingrid White, Emmanuel Baptist’s Associate Pastor. “When she sets her mind to something she makes sure it happens. It has held her in good stead over the years.”

Kory has a lifelong commitment to camping and youth ministries, having directed various age levels at Keats Camps as well as Camp Sorec near Summerland.  For years, she served on the Sylvan Acres Camp Committee.  She has also been a long-time volunteer with Youth for Christ, travelling to international conferences and organizing monthly Youth For Christ rallies in Chilliwack, featuring speakers such as Billy Graham and Bob Pearce, in the 1940’s.

She has served for years on Church Boards (9 years at Emmanuel Baptist alone), teaching Sunday school and serving on missions committees, as well as being very active in hosting visiting missionaries, and organizing mission events.  She has long been involved in caring ministries, serving as a reception coordinator for funerals and services, being the photographer at church events and providing cards and gifts of encouragement to pastors and others in the church family.

At the denominational level, she served as the moderator of the Vancouver Island Association of Baptist Churches and also served as a member of the board of Carey Theological College. She was responsible for the decision to change Carey’s dorms to include women.

“One of her ministries that really stands out, is that she has shown particular care for Baptist pastors,” says Ingrid, explaining that Kory was instrumental in reviving regular meetings of the BUMS – Baptist Union Ministers, 14 years ago.  Kory has facilitated and paid for a quarterly luncheon for active and retired pastors and spouses. Ingrid said, “The lunches have been a particular blessing to several churches because they have drawn our pastors together to help facilitate interaction and encouragement among pastors.  Kory didn’t want the churches to become independent of each other.”

Her lifelong spirit of service has not been limited to specifically Christian endeavours.  In the community, she has served on the Saanich Police Board, as president of the Greater Victoria Teacher’s Association, and as a member of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.

Kory is but one example of the many seniors whose faithful lives of dedicated service are an example and inspiration to us all.  We are indeed grateful for the gift Kory has been, and continues to be, among us.  We give thanks also for her lifelong desire to serve God by serving others.
The Celebration of Kory’s Life will be Friday, November 2, 1:30 pm at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Victoria with a reception to follow.
